The Himalayas run through the countries of India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bhutan, China and Nepal. The Himalayan mountain range consists of three parallel ranges referred to as the Outer Himalayas, the Lesser Himalayas and the Greater Himalayas. The ranges cover approximately 1,500 miles altogether.
The highest peak in the Himalayas is Mt. Everest at 29,029 feet high, which is also the highest peak in the world. There are approximately 15,000 glaciers throughout the Himalayas. The Himalayas formed as a result of tectonic plate motions that caused India and Tibet to collide. There is still tectonic plate motion occurring as of 2014, resulting in a great deal of earthquake activity.
