What country colonized India?

Britain colonized India from 1757 to 1947. The colonization was orchestrated by the East India Company, a British corporation that traded cotton, silk, spices and tea.
The company heavily taxed Indian residents and prevented them from holding office. Hindu and Muslim residents were divided into different locations in 1905, creating strife among the religious groups. Indian residents continued to fight and protest for independence, and after World War II, Britain agreed to end its colonization. Northern areas of India occupied by Muslims were split off into the new nation of Pakistan in 1947, and the rest of India became free immediately afterward.
