As of 2014, Nokia is headquartered in Espoo, Finland and Karaportti, Finland, though Microsoft has mainly taken over the campus in Espoo. The company has been based in Finland for over 100 years.
The company actually originated as a pulp mill in 1865. The company was named after the river the second mill was built near in 1871; the river is named Nokianvirta River. The Nokia Corporation was officially formed in 1967, when three companies merged, including the original pulp mill. They introduced a digital telephone exchange in 1982. In 2014, the research and development arm of Nokia was closed.
