Prior to 2011, the country of Libya's flag was a plain green flag. Libya's current flag has three horizontal bars in order of red, black and green, with the black bar being thickest and containing a white crescent and a star. The current flag was reinstated in 2011, after Muammar al-Qaddafi was overthrown.
Libya is in North Africa and borders the Mediterranean, with Egypt and Tunisia to either side of the country. In 1977, after breaking relations with Egypt, Qaddafi changed the national flag to a solid green to symbolize his planned 'Green Revolution.' A part of his plan involved enriching the soil with fresh water supplies, making the country green again.
