Fayetteville is located in Cumberland County, which is situated in the central portion of North Carolina. Fayetteville acts as the county seat for Cumberland County.
Cumberland County has a population of about 319,000 people. It covers 658 square miles, 652 of which is land. Cumberland County is part of the Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county was named for Prince William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland. In 1771, parts of Cumberland County, Johnston County and Orange County were combined to form Wake County. The counties were restored just three months after being split up. There were other divisions of the county that occurred before 1911.
