Court marriage in India allows an Indian male or female to marry without regard for caste, creed or religion. This procedure also allows an Indian national and a foreigner to marry legally without having to go through the ceremonies and rituals involved in a traditional marriage.
Indian court marriage was legalized under the Special Marriage Act of 1954. To qualify for a court marriage, the bridegroom is required to be at least 21, while the bride must be at least 18. Both parties applying for a court marriage must not have any pre-existing valid marriages to any other person. They must also be of sound mind.
