A courtesy officer is a security officer for an apartment complex who is typically employed by the property management company. Courtesy officers usually live in the apartment complex and perform functions such as patrolling the complex and keeping activity logs.

Courtesy officers are often retired or off-duty police officers, although police training is not typically required. Courtesy officers often carry a pager, allowing them to respond quickly to problems that arise. Courtesy officers typically must pass a background check and provide job references. Courtesy officers sometimes wear company uniforms, but they are often only required to wear a company logo-branded shirt.
