The World Wide Web, which gives computer users access to an enormous amount of documents, graphics and other materials, was created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. At the time, Berners-Lee was a employee of CERN, a scientific research organization based in Switzerland.
Berners-Lee, a specialist in software engineering, realized in the late 1980s that scientists needed a more convenient way to communicate with one another over the Internet. He created an Internet retrieval system that relied on innovative ideas such as HyperText Markup Language and uniform resource identifiers. These components, along with the HyperText Transfer Protocol, formed the foundation of the World Wide Web.
