Are criminal codes the same in each state?

Criminal codes in the United States vary from state to state. While Pennsylvania has a simple penal code system that grades felonies as 1, 2 and 3, New York state grades crimes as A1, A2, B violent, B nonviolent and so on, as attorney Clyde Middleton states.
The different criminal codes, however, are classifications of the same types of crimes, including rape, murder, robbery and arson. Therefore, an unlawful act is considered a crime in all the states irrespective of its criminal code system. Some states, however, have a divergent definition of some of the crimes, and this may influence the way they are classified, according to Middleton.
