Where is Croatia located?

Croatia is located in southeastern Europe. The Adriatic Sea borders Croatia to the west, Slovenia borders it to the north, and Bosnia and Herzegovina border it to the south and east. Additionally, the country has borders with Hungry, Montenegro and Serbia.

The land located in Croatia was originally part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After that empire broke apart as a result of World War I, three ethnic groups, the Croats, Serbs and Slovenes, formed their own country, Yugoslavia, in 1929. Croatia declared its independence from the country in 1991, and four years of armed conflict with the Serbian population followed. The country became part of the NATO in 2000 and the European Union in 2013.
