In what cultures is it normal for a nine-year-old to still be nursing?

It is not considered normal to breastfeed a child until 9 years of age in any culture. However, in Mongolia it is common for mothers to extend breastfeeding until the child is several years old due to a widespread cultural acceptance of extended, public breastfeeding.

Most children in Mongolia wean between 2 and 4 years of age, often concurrent with a subsequent pregnancy as Mongolian mothers do not tandem feed. The last child in a family, however, has the luxury of weaning whenever he feels ready. Mongolian mothers also express milk for other family members to drink or ask other family members to help relieve engorgement if the nursing child is not around.
