As of 2014, there is no cure for epilepsy, states WebMD. However, medications for both monotherapy and polytherapy usually help to stop or control the seizures. For epilepsy that does not respond to medication, options include surgery, vagus nerve stimulation and using a responsive neurostimulation device.
Epilepsy is a disorder where clusters of nerve cells in the brain signal abnormally and cause seizures, explains the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. During seizures, sufferers may experience strange sensations and emotions, may behave differently, and may have convulsions and abnormal movements. Causes of epilepsy include genetic factors, head trauma, strokes and brain tumors.
