Is there a cure for a heel spur?

Most heel spurs can be cured with non-surgical methods. Conservative treatments such as stretching, orthopedic shoes, taping, shoe inserts and physical therapy will successfully cure heel spurs for about 90 percent of sufferers, according to WebMD.

Rest alone may not heal spurs. Extensive rest may increase pain. Heel pain responds well to over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Painful heel spurs can often be remedied by a functional orthotic device. In extreme cases, a corticosteroid injection may be necessary to relieve pain and inflammation. If the heel spur does not respond to any non-invasive treatment, surgical removal may be necessary to restore mobility, notes WebMD.
