According to WebMD, hidradenitis suppurativa, or HS, is a chronic health condition involving painful and swollen lesions in body areas such as the armpits, groin, anal regions and around the breasts. Mild forms can be cured with home remedies; however, severe forms may require daily medication or surgery.
WebMD further states that HS is caused by a blockage of hair follicles and infection or inflammation in some sweat glands. It rarely occurs before puberty, as the changes in sweat glands are usually caused by the activity of sex hormones. The disease can cause severe pain; however, it is rarely life threatening. Patients with a weakened immune system may be at a greater risk.
