As of 2015, there is no cure for macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration or AMD. According to WebMD, a variety of treatments are available for AMD, and the cost depends on which treatment is utilized.
For patients who have health insurance, costs usually involve copays or 10 to 50 percent coinsurance. As of 2014, patients who are not covered by health insurance typically pay out between $9,000 and $65,000 for treatment, according to CostHelper. Drug treatment may take up to two years to complete, and although laser treatment may not cover as long a period and is cheaper, it often needs to be repeated. Early detection of AMD is imperative for treatment to have any effect.
