As of October 2014, psoriasis has no cure, according to WebMD. Treatment for psoriasis includes the use of topical treatments such as salicylic acid ointment, steroid-based creams, topical retinoids, or coal tar ointments and shampoos. Ultraviolet light therapy is sometimes used to treat severe cases of psoriasis.

The proper psoriasis treatment is determined by the severity of the problem, its location, and the patient's age and overall health, explains WebMD. People respond differently to various psoriasis treatments, and doctors typically recommend rotating or changing treatments over time.

WebMD advises that psoriasis sufferers avoid triggers that can cause flare-ups. Skin injuries, stress and alcohol consumption can worsen psoriasis symptoms.
