To apply for a CUSIP number, an application can be submitted through the CUSIP Global Services website, CUSIP.com. The application is specific to the type of CUSIP number being requested, be it a U.S. corporate bond, U.S. municipal bond, international, hedge funds, loans or derivatives.
CUSIP is an acronym for Committee on Uniform Securities Identification Procedures. The CUSIP number is used to identify the stocks and securities of all registered U.S. and Canadian companies, as well as government and municipal bonds. This identifying number has nine characters, including both letters and numbers. The number is unique to the company or issuer of the bond, along with the type of security.
