What is cut-coin jewelry?

Cut coin jewelry art is a method of transforming coins into jewelry, according to Twisted Sifter. As the site explains, cut coin art is predominately created by drilling a small hole or holes into the coin and then using a jeweler saw to remove the extraneous parts of the coin.
Twisted Sifter states that many jewelry artists traditionally focus on the stamped figure of a coin, cutting away the space around it so it appears to float within the border. In the United States, it is legal to perform this type of work as long as the artist does not try to represent the coin as anything other than an altered coin.
