How do you cut laminate flooring?

Cut laminate flooring by referring to the manufacturer's directions, covering the cut with duct tape, and cutting with the finished side up. If molding around doors, cut the molding, and install the flooring under it instead of attempting to trim around the molding.

1. Read the manufacturer's directions

   Use the manufacturer's included directions for the best results when using floor laminating products.

2. Apply duct tape

   Apply duct tape in the approximate location of the cut. Mark the cut on the tape for the best results; this ensures all marks peel off with the tape. Duct tape reduces the amount of splintering that occurs when cutting laminate. When marking the cut, remember to leave room for expansion along the wall.

3. Make the cut

   Most manufacturers recommend cutting laminate with the finished side up, although a few recommend cutting with the finished side down when using power saws. To ensure a clean cut, switch to a finishing blade on the saw when cutting laminate.

4. Cut door casings

   When cutting for door casings, keep the cuts on the laminate straight. Place a scrap piece of flooring on the floor next to the door casing. Use a dovetail saw to cut the casing about 1/16 inch above the level of the flooring, and slide the laminate in place.
