A dilation and curettage is a gynecologic procedure used to diagnose and treat certain uterine conditions, according to Mayo Clinic. A doctor sometimes performs a D&C with another procedure called a hysteroscopy, which allows the doctor to view the lining of the uterus.
A gynecologist performs a D&C to remove tissue from the uterus. Tissue tests can indicate uterine cancer, uterine polyps and endometrial hyperplasia, explains Mayo Clinic. A doctor may also perform a hysteroscopy during a D&C to look for abnormalities in the lining of the uterus and to view inside the uterus to locate and remove uterine polyps and fibroid tumors.
