Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, first in Buras-Triumph, La., and then again in St. Bernard Parish and St. Tammany Parish. It hit Louisiana as a Category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds between 130 and 156 miles per hour.
Hurricane Katrina first formed on the evening of Aug. 23, 2005, when the storm was passing through the Bahamas. It became a Category 1 hurricane two days later. It became a Category 2 storm on the afternoon of Aug. 25 and a Category 3 storm the following day. In the early hours of Aug. 28, Hurricane Katrina was classified as a Category 4 storm, and it progressed to Category 5 later that day.
