Hurricane Katrina formed on Aug. 23, 2005, over the Bahamas. On Aug. 28, the National Weather Service warned citizens in the Gulf Coast states of America that the hurricane was likely to leave the area uninhabitable for an extended period of time.
Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast states on Aug. 29, 2005. It was rated a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 140 mph. Experts estimate that the hurricane caused more than $100 billion in damage to homes, businesses and other land structures. When Hurricane Katrina reached landfall in the United States, it was 400 miles wide.
