David Hockney is one of the most important artists of the 20th century due to his influence on the Pop Art movement in the 1960s through his paintings and photography. Hockney grew up in Britain, but moved to Los Angeles in the late 1960s after visiting there earlier in the decade.
Hockney started out doing only paintings of pools, interiors and exteriors of houses. It was when he photographed a location for reference photos that he realized the collage that he had created was art as well. This occurrence moved Hockney into mainly photography until the 1980s, when he returned to painting as his main form.
