Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, and it marks the commencement of Lent. It is known as the last feast day before the start of 40 days of fast and abstinence.
Fat Tuesday is a Christian holiday called Mardi Gras in French. The first place in the United States to celebrate Mardi Gras was Mobile, Ala. As of 2013, Mobile, Ala., has the second largest festival aside from New Orleans, La. New Orleans held its first Mardi Gras parade in 1837, however there were no floats in the parade. The floats entered the parade in 1857. As of 2013, the usual attendance of Mardi Gras in New Orleans is around 1.4 million according to CNN.
