Veterans Day is an American federal holiday celebrated each year on November eleventh. The day honors those who have served in the United States military.
The origins of Veterans Day begin with Armistice Day, which was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919, to honor those who died in World War I. In 1938, Congress made Armistice Day a legal holiday. In 1945, World War II vet Raymond Weeks suggested expanding the holiday to honor all veterans, and in 1954, a Congressional Act officially changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day. From 1971 through 1977, Veterans Day observances were moved to the fourth Monday in October.
