Why is Veterans Day observed in November?

Americans observe Veterans Day in November because the hostilities of World War I ended on Nov. 11, 1918. Though not official until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in June of 1919, the armistice of seven months prior marked the end of fighting between the Allies and Germany.
Originally referred to as Armistice Day, November 11 became a legal holiday on May 13, 1938. In 1954, after American troops fought in World War II and the Korean War, service organizations for veterans in the United States urged the 83rd Congress to change the holiday to Veterans Day in order to honor American veterans of all wars.
