"DEA" stands for Drug Enforcement Administration and is a United States law enforcement agency under the Department of Justice. It is the mission of the DEA to enforce federal controlled substances laws and regulations and to bring violators to justice. The DEA works domestically and in cooperation with foreign agencies.
The DEA was created by the Nixon administration in 1973 as part of the war on drugs. Ever since its inception, the agency has placed very restrictive schedules on substances with medical uses, which has brought criticism from the public and the scientific community. The DEA has an annual budget of $2.02 billion and more than 10,000 employees as of 2014.
