When is the deadline for taxes?

The deadline for filing taxes is usually April 15 for most people. This applies for the filing of federal taxes, not state taxes. For people who cannot pay their taxes in full by April 15, a six-month income tax extension may be granted by the Internal Revenue Service.

There are several cases when April 15 is not the deadline for filing income tax. For Americans living outside the United States or residing in Puerto Rico, the tax deadline is June 15. For residents of the continental United States, if April 15 falls on a Friday, tax returns are due the following Monday. For weekend dates, taxes are due the following Tuesday.
