How do you define "chrysalis?"

Dictionary.com defines the word "chrysalis" as "the hard-shelled pupa of a moth or butterfly; an obtect pupa." Butterflies experience the chrysalis phase as part of their life cycle. Once a caterpillar is fully grown, it fastens itself to a piece of vegetation and begins this stage of its life.

When ready, a caterpillar sheds its skin, revealing the hard chrysalis. The adult form of the insect develops within this casing. The chrysalis is equivalent to the pupal stage of other insects. As the chrysalis, like other pupae, has limited to no movement, it is extremely vulnerable to predators. Some species, however, are able to move their abdomens or produce loud sounds to deter predators. The pupal stage of the moth is usually called a cocoon.
