What is the definition of "root uptake"?

Root uptake is the process plants use to take water from the soil, or other medium, and deliver it to the rest of the plant's structure. Roots are always absorbing moisture, meaning root uptake is constant. Dry or arid conditions slow root uptake and force roots to drive deep underground.

Roots are permeable, meaning they easily absorb water. They reach down into soil to find the best source of water for the plant. Some plants grow root hairs, which greatly increase the absorption of water.

Water is essential to plants. It is vital to growth, photosynthesis and distributing organic molecules to the plant.
