The acronym rRNA stands for ribosomal ribonucleic acid. It is the RNA component of the ribosome in the cell. rRNA is essential for amino acid and protein synthesis and is a key component of translation in the cell.
Ribosomes are cellular organelles that are found in all living organisms. Their main function is to synthesize proteins by utilizing rRNA strands. To do this, ribosomes intake mRNA (messenger RNA) and convert the RNA nucleotides to rRNA, which then converts into amino acid chains. These amino acid chains compose the primary structures of proteins and will exit the ribosome. Once the proteins have been synthesized, they can exit the cell and act in different parts of the organism.
