Delta Sigma Theta sorority's official colors are crimson and cream, which signify courage and purity. The organization was founded by 22 former members of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority on January 13, 1913, at Howard University. The group broke away to address social issues such as women's suffrage.

Scholarship, service, learning and sisterhood are the guiding principles of the sorority, and the motto is "Intelligence is the Torch of Wisdom."

Notable members who personify these principles include: Sadie T.M. Alexander, the nation's first woman to earn a PhD in economics and co-founder of the National Bar Association; Brigadier General Hazel Johnson Brown, the first black woman general in the United States Army and civil rights activists Dr. Dorothy Height and Myrlie Evers-Williams.
