The McLaren F1 supercar was based on a concept originally formulated by designer Gordon Murray, and was fully designed by Murray with assistance from interiors and exteriors expert Peter Stevens. Both men were working for British automobile manufacturer McLaren Automotive at the time of the F1's conception.
Gordon Murray worked for McLaren on the F1 circuit from 1987 to 2006 as a technical director, but he did his groundbreaking work with the F1 sports car and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren while working for McLaren Cars, a company subsidiary. As of 2015, Murray is working as a consultant for Group Lotus and as an independent designer with Gordon Murray Design.
