In 1965, fashion designer Mary Quant popularized the miniskirt. She owned a trendy fashion boutique in London called Bazaar. She credited the young women she saw on the streets as inspiration for the design.
While Quant was catering to young women in London and creating an international trend, French designer André Courrèges was also raising hemlines. Courrèges is considered the designer who made miniskirts haute couture, or "high fashion," in sophisticated Paris. Iconic fashion models of the 1960s included Jean Shrimpton and Leslie "Twiggy" Hornby, both of whom helped to make the miniskirt a sensation, by showcasing their long, slender legs in magazines.
