The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) originally developed the Food Guide Pyramid. The pyramid was intended to succinctly provide information on the various types of food a person needed to eat to have a healthy diet and get all the necessary nutrition.
The scientific study of nutrition and health made major strides forward in the years after the USDA first introduced the pyramid. As of 2005, the USDA had retired the old pyramid and replaced it with MyPyramid, an alteration of the original guide. As of 2011, the USDA introduced MyPlate, a new guide that emphasized fruits and vegetables in the diet.
