Anna-Britt Agnsäter, head test-kitchen chef for Swedish retail cooperative Kooperativa Förbundet, created the first food pyramid in 1974. Agnsäter based the pyramid on the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare's recommendations regarding cheap, nutritious basic and supplemental foods.
In 1992, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released the Food Guide Pyramid, using graphics and text to demonstrate food varieties, proportions and advice on moderation. The food pyramid was to be used in conjunction with "A Pattern for Daily Food Choices," a food guide in publication since the early 1980s. Food pyramid revisions in 2005 and 2011 added new graphics and also updated varieties and proportions.
