Does diatomaceous earth kill fleas?

Diatomaceous earth is an effective method of killing fleas. Composed of microscopic pieces of silica, it works by cutting the exoskeleton of the flea and absorbing the body fluids, causing it to dry out.
For flea control, diatomaceous earth can be sprinkled on carpets, furniture, pet beds or anywhere fleas are a problem. It remains effective as long as it stays dry. Allow it to sit for at least a few hours before vacuuming.
Although it is considered non-toxic to people and pets, care should be taken while applying diatomaceous earth. It is a fine powder and can irritate the skin, eyes and throat.
