Use diatomaceous earth in the house by placing it in crevices and sprinkling it in areas where bugs are found. Use the powder in the garden when the weather is dry, and reapply it after rain.
- Take safety precautions
Food-grade diatomaceous earth is non-toxic and safe for humans and animals, but breathing in the dust can cause respiratory irritation. Wear a mask and gloves when applying diatomaceous earth. Do not use diatomaceous earth products that are sold for pool use because they are not safe to breathe.
- Apply diatomaceous earth in the house
Use a puffer device or syringe to blow diatomaceous earth under baseboards or in wall gaps. Sprinkle diatomaceous earth on pet beds to control fleas. The product dehydrates insects and takes up to two weeks to kill them.
- Sprinkle diatomaceous earth in the garden
Dust garden soil with diatomaceous earth, which is effective against many pests, including beetles, cutworms and slugs. Apply the powder only when plants are dry because diatomaceous earth is not effective when wet.
- Protect beneficial insects
Immediately after applying diatomaceous earth, place a sheet over plants that attract bees to protect these beneficial insects. Remove the cover after a day, and rinse off the diatomaceous earth.
