Abraham Lincoln was born and spent his early childhood in southwestern Kentucky near Hopkinsville. When he was 7, the family moved to Indiana, and when he was 21, the extended family moved to Illinois near Decatur. Shortly thereafter, Lincoln moved to Springfield, Ill., where he lived until he became president.
Lincoln was born at home in a one-room log cabin, and the homes he lived in as a child and young adult were similarly humble. When he moved to Springfield, he boarded with local families, doing odd jobs and teaching himself surveying to survive. Only five years after moving to Springfield, he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives.
