What did ancient Greek children wear?

Babies wore no clothing except a cloth diaper or wrap in the colder months while young girls wore ankle lengthy dresses and boys were knee-length tunics. Boys and girls wore clothing similar to adult men and women.

A chiton was a tunic worn by both genders including children. The chitons were long except for those worn by athletes or warriors. An alternative to the chiton was the peplos. Both types of clothing would be belted or pinned.

One difference in dress was among Spartan boys training to be soldiers. These boys wore nothing but a thin red cloak and went barefoot throughout the year in order to toughen up and prepare for war.
