Antoine Lavoisier is regarded as the founder of modern chemistry. He named the gas, oxygen, and found that burning is the chemical action of a burning material and oxygen. He was also one of the earliest individuals to stress the importance of precisely measuring items in an experiment.
Antoine also named hydrogen and largely contributed to the forming of the metric system. He developed a better way to name elements and compounds in 1787, and two years later he reclassified the elements. Antoine was born in Paris, France, in 1743, and he graduated from the College Mazarin in Paris in 1763. He was wrongly executed by the government during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror in 1794.
