The Battle of Normandy began on June 6, 1944, when the Western allies invaded France's Normandy beaches. The battle ended in late August 1944 when northern France was liberated from German control.
According to the Naval History and Heritage Command, a foothold was established by the Western allies by day's end on June 6, 1944. The Normandy beaches were fully secured by more than 326,000 troops by June 11. The Battle of Normandy is considered a significant victory over Germany as it prevented Hitler from building up a front against the Soviets. On May 8, 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered, signaling an end to the war.
