The Boxing Day tsunami occurred in the Indian Ocean in 2004. It originated from an earthquake that occurred where the Burma and India continental plates meet. Waves as high as 50 feet hit the coast in some locations and caused high death tolls and massive destruction of property.
Tsunamis in the Indian Ocean are rare, with most recorded ones occurring in the Pacific. The Boxing Day tsunami began at the epicenter of a 9.0-magnitude earthquake. A 600-mile rupture of the Earth's crust displaced a massive amount of water and sent waves crashing toward shorelines on Dec. 26, a date observed as a holiday in many of the areas affected.
