What is Boxing Day in England?

Traditionally, employers in the United Kingdom gave money, food and other goods to their employees on Boxing Day. The holiday still takes place in England on December 26, but it is now associated with post-Christmas shopping and major sporting events.

There are numerous explanations given for the origin of the holiday's name. Some say that it refers to the boxes employers filled with gifts for their employees, while others believe it refers to the boxes of leftover food that were given to the less fortunate after Christmas celebrations.

In England, all schools and organizations are closed on Boxing Day, since it is an official holiday.
