The Battle of Britain was an aerial battle spanning over three months in 1940. During that time, the British suffered the loss of 1,023 aircraft. The Germans lost 1,887 aircraft. The Battle of Britain also involved the bombing of British cities by the Germans. This left 23,002 British civilians dead and 32,138 wounded. The commander of the Royal Air Forces during the battle was Air Marshal Hugh Dowding. The German commander was Hermann Goring.
