Where did cake come from?

According to Foodtimeling.org, cake dates back to ancient times and began with the Egyptians. Cakes were first made to be bread-like. By the 18th century when cake pans were developed, people considered cakes to be a symbol of well-being and they were sometimes used in religious ceremonies.

Cakes became a popular way to celebrate a birthday, wedding or holiday. Dry cake mixes were introduced in the 1800s. Cupcakes were originally made in earthenware tea cups or small clay cups using similar ingredients as in pound cakes. The words icing and frosting were used interchangeably. Icing implied a thinner glaze, while frosting was thought of as thicker and more substantial.
