Cavemen lived as far back as 3.7 million years ago. These early ancestors of humans date back to the Tertiary period.
Scientists have found evidence that cavemen co-existed with woolly mammoths and other prehistoric mammals. Footprints of cavemen were first discovered in volcanic ash found in Tanzania, Africa millions of years ago. The first skull of a caveman, however, was not found until the 1800s. It was discovered in Italy and scientists believe it dates back to around 30,000 B.C to 200,000 B.C. In the late 1800s, skeletons of five cavemen were found in France. They were discovered in a rock shelter.
