Where did the Cherokee live?

The Cherokee covered a large area of the Southeastern United States, including Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. The tribes were moved from this area when gold was found on the Indian lands in Georgia.
The Cherokee fought the removal and some even went into hiding to prevent being removed and sent west to Oklahoma on what is known as the Trail of Tears today. A small group was able to remain legally and became known as the Eastern Band of the Cherokee and those located in Oklahoma are now the Western Band. The signers of the treaty the instigated this move were not in a position of power to do so and the Cherokee fought the treaty, but failed to stop the removal of their people.
