Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas on Oct. 12, 1492. He named the island San Salvador and continued on to Cuba and Hispaniola. After he returned to Spain, Columbus made a second voyage to the Caribbean. This voyage landed in Dominica on Nov. 3, 1493.

On his second voyage to North America, Columbus established the settlement of Santo Domingo on Hispaniola. The settlement failed during his third voyage, and Columbus was arrested in 1500 for mistreating the settlers. Columbus was not convicted and left for his final voyage in 1502.

Although he defended himself from the charges, Columbus lost his governorship of Hispaniola and was barred from returning to the colony. He died in Spain in 1506.
