Christopher Columbus thought he had landed on an island off the coast of Asia at the end of his historic 1492 ocean crossing, according to About Geography. Instead, the island, which he named San Salvador, was located in the Bahamas.
Christopher Columbus began his journey across the Atlantic Ocean hoping to reach China and bring back gold, silks and spices. Although he found none on San Salvador, he was convinced that China was near. He continued his explorations on to Cuba and Hispaniola without finding the riches he sought. Columbus made a total of four trips to the islands off the Americas. Historians have long disputed whether or not he ever knew that he was not near Asia.
